The electric discharge is the release and transmission of electricity in an applied electric field through a medium such as a gas.
When two oppositely charged bodies neutralize their charges by some mechanism, it is called electric discharge.
If we take a DC battery and connect the two opposite polarities(viz. positive and negative) with a wire, we see a spark.
This is precise because of the electric discharge between the two. This discharge ionizes the air, which we see as a spark.
Another example is lightning: A very large amount of potential is developed in the clouds and the earth. Suddenly this gets discharged by ionizing the air, which we see as lightning.
