Question

What is an isotonic solution?

Open in App
Solution

  • Isotonic solution: A solution that has the same amount of solute concentration both inside and outside the cell.
  • When a cell is placed in an isotonic solution, the concentration of solution inside and outside the cell is equal, then the same amount of water particles enters and leaves the cell through a semipermeable membrane.
  • Hence, there is no net movement across the semipermeable membrane. Therefore, the shape of the cell remains unchanged.
