Olfactory bulb :

  1. The part of the forebrain located just above the nasal cavity is known as the olfactory bulb.
  2. It is formed by the extension of bulb-shaped nervous tissue of the brain.
  3. The olfactory bulb consists of five layers.
  4. The outermost layer is the glomerular layer containing spherical glomeruli and juxtaglomerular cells.
  5. The next layer is the external plexiform layer which contains dendrites of mitral cells and tufted cells.
  6. The third layer of the olfactory bulb consists of mitral cells.
  7. The fourth layer is the internal plexiform layer, which contains nerve fibres and granular cell bodies.
  8. The last internal layer is the granular layer which contains the inhibitory neurons and the granular cells.

Functions of olfactory bulb :

  1. The olfactory bulb is necessary for proper sense of smell
  2. It is involved in transmitting smell information from the nose to the brain.
  3. It enhances some selective fragrances.
