Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemical equivalents of male sex hormones; testosterone or dihydrotestosterone. In addition to their role as stimulators of bone and muscle growth, these sex hormones in males are responsible for the development of sexual characteristics and sex organs.

These anabolic steroid hormones are used for the treatment of male individuals who have hypogonadism, delayed puberty and male impotence. Apart from these, they are used in the treatment of osteoporosis, anaemia and also in the treatment of breast cancer in women.
