Question

What is another name for Group 2 elements?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The group 2 elements are alkaline earth metals that are insoluble in water and resistant to heating and shared their properties with their oxides.
  2. The group-2 of the periodic table consists of six metallic elements namely Beryllium (Be), Magnesium(Mg), Calcium (Ca), Strontium(Sr), Barium(Ba), and Radium (Ra).
  3. Group 2 elements have 2 electrons in their outermost shell. Valency depends on the number of electrons present in the outermost shell which is known as the valence shell.
  4. The basic nature of hydroxide of the group-2 elements is increased from Be to Ra.
  1. The increase in ionic radius down the group results in a decrease in the strength of the bond M(OH)2to show more dissociation of hydroxides and greater basic character.
  2. The hydroxide of Be, Be(OH)2is amphoteric but the hydroxide of other elements of group-2 is basic.
  3. Therefore, another name for Group 2 elements is Alkaline earth metal.
