In multicellular organisms, cells that are no longer needed or are a threat to the organism are destroyed by a tightly regulated cell suicide process known as Apoptosis or Programmed Cell Death. Apoptosis is mediated by proteolytic enzymes called caspases. When a cell is compelled to commit suicide, caspases go into action. They break down the cellular components needed for survival, and they spur production of enzymes known as DNases, which destroy the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.
