Asphyxia:

• Asphyxia or suffocation is a medical condition that emerges either due to an interruption in normal breathing or inadequate oxygen supply to the body.
• Without oxygen, cells of the body stop working properly and eventually resulting in unconsciousness and often death.
• It is generally caused due to burning of fossil fuels containing carbon in the absence or limited supply of air/oxygen.
• This leads to the evolution of carbon monoxide gas which is highly toxic and causes asphyxia.

Precautions to be taken:

• The room should be well-ventilated.
• Maintain a distance from the place where coal is burning.
• If feeling drowsy should immediately go out of the room.
