Atmometer is a scientific instrument used for measuring the rate of evaporation from a wet surface into the air.
It consists of a ceramic cup connected to a water reservoir by a tube. The porous ceramic cup is wetted and the cylindrical reservoir is filled with water.
As the water in the cup evaporates, more water is pulled up from the reservoir.
A gauge running up the side of the atmometer measures the level of the water in the reservoir in inches. As the water evaporates, the reading increases.
