Question

Define the average rate of reaction?

Open in App
Solution

The average rate of reaction:

  • "It is defined as the ratio of change in concentration of reactants or products to the change in a time interval of a chemical reaction."
  • Mathematically, the average rate of reaction is denoted by “r” and is represented as follows:

Averagerateofreaction=Change in concentrationTimerate(r)=ΔxΔt

Sign of average rate of reaction:

  • When the rate of concentration of reactant decreases then the average rate of reaction will be negative.
  • When the rate of concentration of product increases then the average rate of reaction will be positive.
