Beriberi is a disease caused by the deficiency of Vitamin B1. It was first observed amongst Japanese sea-men who were generally fed with a diet of polished rice. It was then found that polished or dehusked rice is deficient in vitamin B1. Beriberi occurs mainly in areas where polished rice is the staple diet of people.

Symptoms :

-Waterlogging of the tissues resulting in severe pain in legs and oedema.

-Extreme weakness, headache and dizziness.

-Loss of appetite .

-Paralysis of some body parts may also occur.

Prevention/Control :

-A diet rich in vitamin B1 should be taken.

-The food items rich in vitamin B1 include grain cereals, beans, groundnuts, green vegetables, soybean, milk and seafood.
