The phenomenon of an increase in the concentration of harmful non-biodegradable chemical substances in the body of a living organism is called biomagnification.
For example, in an aquatic ecosystem in case the water is polluted with mercury, the concentration of mercury will be the highest in the large fishes as they consume organisms that have consumed the polluted water. The consumption of these large fishes with biomagnified mercury will cause severe disorders.
Biomagnification leads to the collapse of food chains and thus disrupts the ecosystem.
