The forest act 1878 divided the forest into three main types. They are reserved forest, protected forest and village forest.
Village forest is a forest in which the villagers guards the forest. They were allowed to stay on in the reserved forests on the condition that they worked free for the forest department in cutting and transporting trees, protecting the forest from fires. They could not take anything from the forest for their personal use.
