Inflorescence:

  1. The arrangement of flowers on the floral axis is known as an inflorescence.
  2. Depending on whether the apex gets developed into a flower or continues to grow, inflorescence can be of various types.

Types are as follows:

Racemose:

  1. These include the types of inflorescence that result in the continuous elongation of the apical shoot since it does not terminate into a flower.
  2. It includes raceme, panicle, spike, catkin, etc.
  3. Examples: Mustard, Snapdragon, Gulmohar, wheat, and barley.

Cymose:

  1. In a cymose type of inflorescence, the apical shoot terminates in a flower.
  2. Thus, the lateral branches are longer.
  3. Scorpioid, helicoid, biparous cyme, and multiparous cyme are various arrangements of cymose inflorescence.
  4. Members of the Solanum family show this type of arrangement.

Capitulum:

  1. It is an inflorescence whereby the flower is composed of closely packed florets that have no stalks and arise on a flattened axis, all at the same level.
  2. Members of the family Compositae show this inflorescence.
