  • It is a thermoplastic polymer of styrene which can be molded into objects.
  • It is formed by the monomer styrene that results in the formation of polystyrene which is a synthetic polymer known as thermocol.
  • It is used for thermal insulation.
  • It is used to protect products like TVs, computers, glass products, etc.

Effects of increase in uses of thermocol:

  • Thermocol is not eco-friendly because it is non-biodegradable.
  • Its uses increase the contamination of drinks and food.
  • It also affects the health of laborers who work in manufacturing thermocol as it is a carcinogen (cancer-causing).
  • Burning thermocol is extremely dangerous as it releases toxic gases including carbon monoxide and styrene vapors.
