Solution
Cavitation:
The filling of the tracheid or xylem vessel with air is cavitation, which is also known as an airlock.
In the process of transpiration, a water column is pulled out of plants by evaporation at the surface of the leaf cell.
The pulling of water out of the plant gets higher than the water molecules’ ability to remain together, and the water column breaks.
Certain structural aspects of plants help them contain the air bubbles, so they do not completely cut off the water that moves up to the plant.
