What is chiasma in meiosis?

Open in App
Solution

Chiasma:

  1. Chiasma refers to structures formed between a pair of homologous chromosomes by cross recombination.
  2. It physically links homologous chromosomes during meiosis.
  3. In other words, Chiasma is the point of contact between two non-sister chromosomes belonging to the homologous chromosomes.
  4. The exchange of genetic content in a particular plasma can occur between two chromosomes, known as chromosomal crossover.
  5. However, this is more common during meiosis than mitosis.
  6. The absence of Chiasma in meiosis often leads to chromosomal mismatch and aneuploidy.
