Question

WHAT IS CHLORIDE OF LIME?
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM CALCIUM CHLORIDE?

Open in App
Solution

Chloride of lime is commercially called as Bleaching Powder. It is a mixture of calcium chloride, calcium oxychloride and calcium hydroxide (unreacted). It is prepared by passing chlorine over slaked lime (calcium hydroxide).
Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 --> CaCl2 + CaOCl2 + H2O
In this the calcium oxychloride decomposes to liberated chlorine in water.
CaOCl2 + H2O --> Ca(OH)2 + Cl2
So it is used in disinfecting and bleaching.
