The process of producing 'syngas' from coal is called coal gasification. Syngas is also called synthetic gas. It is a mixture of $C O$ and $H_{2}$ which is used for the synthesis of methanol and a number of hydrocarbons.
$C + H_{2} O ⟶ C O + H_{2}$
