Coal is a naturally occurring black material that is a mixture of carbon and compounds of carbon-containing hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur. It is a major source of energy. It's a fossil fuel formed from the dead remains of plants buried deep inside the earth.

Uses of coal are as follows:

1) It is used as a fuel for heating purposes in homes and industries.

2) It is used as a fuel in thermal power plants for producing electricity.

3) It is used in the manufacture of coke, fuel gases like coal gas, synthetic petrol and synthetic natural gas.
