Question

What is common to all electromagnetic radiations?

Open in App
Solution

Electromagnetic radiations:

  1. Radiation with both electric and magnetic fields thus moves in form of waves is called electromagnetic radiation.
  2. It originates from both natural and man-made sources.

Types of electromagnetic radiation:

Electromagnetic radiations encompass radio waves, microwaves, infrared light, visible light, ultraviolet light, x-rays, and gamma rays.

  1. Radio waves are at the bottom of the electromagnetic spectrum, having frequencies of approximately 30billionhertz, or 30gigahertz, and wavelengths longer than 10mm(0.4inches).
  2. Microwaves are in the EM spectrum among both radio and infrared.
  3. Infrared is a wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and visible light.
  4. Visible light is located in the center of the electromagnetic spectrum, between infrared and ultraviolet. It does have frequencies ranging from 400THz-800THz.
  5. Ultraviolet light is located in the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X-rays. It has frequencies ranging from 8×1014-3×1016Hz.
  6. Gamma-rays are in the spectrum somewhere above delicate X-rays. They have speeds larger than 1018Hz and wavelengths smaller than 100 pm.

Things common to all electromagnetic radiations:

  1. All kinds of electromagnetic radiation are transverse waves that don't really move through a medium.
  2. In a vacuum, everything moves at the same velocity (space).
  3. Observe the rules of reflection and refraction.
  4. Electric and magnetic fields have no effect on them.
