Composting:
- Composting is the procedure by which waste material is converted into manure.
- Biodegradable substances, which can be degraded by microorganisms are dumped into a pit and covered with soil.
- Microorganisms present in the soil accumulate over these wastes and break them into simpler molecules to finally produce compost which can be used by farmers as manure for plant growth.
Vermicomposting:
- In some cases, composting is achieved by the addition of earthworms in the pits containing biodegradable wastes. Such a type of composting is known as Vermicomposting.
Importance of composting:
- Composting increases the fertility and water resistance of the soil. It promotes germination in plants, increases crop production, and suppresses disease in plants.
