Sound is a pressure wave. It travels through a medium.
Sound when traveling through a gas, propagates in the form of compression and rarefactions.
Compression is a region of high pressure whereas rarefaction is a region of low pressure.
Since the vibration of the particles is in the direction of propagation of the waves sound wave is called a longitudinal wave.
