Solution
Definition:The coordination number of an atom in a molecule is thenumber of atoms bonded to the atom.
Example:Carbon has a coordination number of 4 in a methane (CH4) molecule since it has four hydrogens bonded to it.
Coordination number isthe number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a central atom holds as its nearest neighbours in a complex or coordination compound. For example: In [Mo(CN)8]4–, The central metal Mo is linked to eight cyanide ion, thus the metal atom has coordination number 8. Similarly, in [Pt(NH3)4]2+, Pt is linked to four NH3molecules. Hence, its coordination number is 4.
