Question

What is corrosion? Do gold ornaments corrode? Justify.

Open in App
Solution

Corrosion is the deterioration of metals by a redox process in which metals are oxidised by oxygen gas in presence of moisture. Iron rust, silver losing lustre, copper and brass coated with green film represent corrosion. Gold ornaments do not corrode. Gold is weaker reducing agent (stronger oxidising agent) and hence cannot be easily oxidised.
