What is cow pox? How did Edward Jenner created a vaccine for small pox patient with the help of cow pox?

Cowpox is the viral disease of cows which human can get through contact with the infected cows. It resembles mild chicken pox. It became the basis for Edward Jenner to produce first small pox vaccines. He observed that his patients who came in contact with cattle and contracted cow pox never got infected with chicken pox. So, he concluded that cowpox provides immunity to small pox.
