During meiosis, chromatids of homologous chromosomes break into segments and gets exchanged, this process is known as crossing over. Crossing over is responsible for the formation of new combination of genes which results in genetic diversity. Since in crossing over, some parts from the mothers chromosome and some part from the fathers chromosome is exchanged, so the offsprings produced will have mix characters which will leads to variation in an organisms.
