DDT

  • DDT is the common term for Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane.
  • IUPAC name of DDT is 1,1'-(2,2,2-Trichloroethane-1,1-diyl)bis(4-chlorobenzene).
  • It is a tasteless, colorless, and practically odorless organochlorine crystal.
  • It was used to kill insects.
  • During World War II, DDT was used to assist reduce the spread of malaria and other infections.

Biodegradable

  • A biodegradable material is one that may be decomposed by bacteria or other natural organisms without polluting the environment.
  • Example: Food materials, kitchen waste, cow dung, etc.

Non-Biodegradable

  • A non-biodegradable material is a substance that cannot be broken down by natural organisms and is, therefore, a cause of pollution.
  • Example: Plastics, Polythene, DDT, etc.

DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a pesticide that is non biodegradable.
