The reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more than two elements or compounds is called a decomposition reaction. This kind of reaction requires an energy source such as light, heat or electricity which helps in breaking the bonds of the reactant.

This is an example of an Electrolytic decomposition reaction. In this reaction, a single compound H2​O​ is broken down into two elements H2, and O2​ using electrical energy.
