Ethyl alcohol mixed with methyl alcohol is called denatured alcohol. In order to make it unfit for drinking purpose the methyl alcohol has been added to ethyl alcohol. Reactions of ethanoic acid: 2CHâ‚ƒCOOH + 2Na â†’ 2 CHâ‚ƒCOONa + Hâ‚‚â†‘ 2CHâ‚ƒCOOH + Naâ‚‚COâ‚ƒ â†’ 2CHâ‚ƒCOONa + COâ‚‚â†‘ + Hâ‚‚â†‘ CHâ‚ƒCOOH + Câ‚‚Hâ‚…OH â†’ CHâ‚ƒCOOCâ‚‚Hâ‚… + Hâ‚‚O CHâ‚ƒCOOH + Conc.Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„ â†’ No reaction takes place but only proton transfer takes place from Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„ to ethanoic acid. This mixture generally used in esterification of reaction.
