Open in App
Solution

Denitrification:

  1. It is a microbial process in which nitrates and nitrites are reduced to gaseous nitrogen.
  2. The organisms carrying out denitrification are called denitrifiers.

Denitrification in wastewater treatment:

  1. Both denitrification and nitrification processes are important in wastewater treatment.
  2. Usually, wastewater contains Ammonia.
  3. Ammonia is removed from water by the Nitrification process, thus releasing Nitrates and Nitrates.
  4. These nitrates and nitrites are converted to gaseous nitrogen by the Denitrification process under anoxic conditions in presence of Denitrifying filters.
  5. The released nitrogen gas is removed from the water before entering the distribution system.
