Question

What is difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes?

Open in App
Solution

Prokaryotic ribosomes:

  1. Ribosomes exist within bacteria, fungi, and other being such as lower and microscopic levels.
  2. Prokaryotic ribosomes freely float in the cytoplasm

Eukaryotic ribosomes:

  1. Ribosomes exist within humans and other beings such as higher-level organisms.
  2. Eukaryotic ribosomes are found in the cytoplasm and are also attached to the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear membrane.

Prokaryotic ribosomes

Eukaryotic ribosomes

Prokaryotic ribosomes are present in prokaryotes (bacterium)Eukaryotic ribosomes are present in all eukaryotic cells
It occurs as free ribosomes in the cytoplasm of prokaryotes It occurs as free ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
Prokaryotes have the 30s and 50s subunit which makes up a 70s ribosome.Eukaryotes have the 40s and 60s subunit which makes up an 80s ribosome.
It consists of 2 subunits, the 50s larger subunit, and the 30s smaller subunitIt consists of 2 subunits, the 60s larger subunit, and the 40s smaller subunit
Protein synthesis of prokaryotic ribosomes is inhibited by cycloheximide.Protein synthesis of eukaryotic ribosomes is inhibited by Chloramphenicol.
