Diffusion is defined as the free movement of molecules of substances from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Importance of diffusion:
Diffusion helps in gaseous exchange during respiration and helps in the removal of carbon dioxide and intake of oxygen.
Diffusion helps in the intake of gases during photosynthesis in plants. During photosynthesis, it helps in the intake of carbon dioxide through the stomata of leaves along the concentration gradient.
Water loss by the leaves occurs due to diffusion and the process of water loss in form of water vapor is known as transpiration.
Diffusion also helps in the spread of molecules such as ions throughout the protoplasm of the cell.
