Downstream processing is the process of isolation, purification, and separation of products from recombinant DNA technology (RDT).
Downstream processing is done in three steps: Removal of insoluble matter, Product isolation and purification, and Product polishing.
Removal of the insoluble matter: Acquiring particulate-free liquid using filtration, density gradient centrifugation, sedimentation, and precipitation.
Product isolation and purification: Removal of substances having different properties than the desired product using ultrafiltration, chromatography, solvent extraction, etc.
Product polishing: Packaging of the final product.
