Dry Oxygen

  • Dry oxygen is also the form of the oxygen molecule itself i.e. Oxygen is considered Dry, based on the assumption that the moisture content in a flue stream is removed before the oxygen content is measured.
  • The main difference between dry oxygen and normal oxygen is that the vapor density of dry Oxygen is greater than that of moist.
  • Dry oxygen is heavier than moist oxygen.

Preparation of Dry Oxygen

  • The gas can be dried by passing it through a tower containing drying chemicals such as phosphorous pentoxide, fused calcium chloride, or bubbling it through concentrated sulphuric acid.

Uses of Dry Oxygen

  • For the patient, dry oxygen is the recommended method of oxygen delivery.
  • While using dry oxygen, a particular amount of moisture in the surrounding environment must be maintained.
  • Dry oxygen requires clean water in the surrounding air.
