Solution
The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus, It is highly vascularised. It has a basal layer and a functional layer which becomes thick and shed during menstruation. During the first part of the cycle, estrogen is made by ovaries. It causes the lining to growth and thickening of the endometrium to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. If the fertilization doesn't occur then the decreased level of progesterone and estrogen results in menstruation. Once the lining is shed, a new menstrual cycle begins.
