Question

What is eutrophication? What is its significance?

Open in App
Solution

Eutrophication is an increase in the number of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. due to the run-off water from the land or fertilizers from the fields. These increases in nutrients result in algal blooms. Algal blooms consume oxygen from the water making it unavailable for the aquatic animals. Hence eutrophication affects the aquatic ecosystem.
