Question

What is evaporation? How does temperature and wind effect evaporation?

Open in App
Solution

Evaporation is the process of liquid changing into vapours even below its boiling point.

  • There are different factors which affect the rate of evaporation
  1. Temperature
  2. Surface area
  3. Humidity
  4. Wind speed.

Effect of temperature on rate of evaporation:

  • Water can also evaporate at low temperatures, the rate of evaporation increases with increase in the temperature.
  • Because the molecules move at a faster rate at high temperatures the surface molecules have enough energy to break away from liquid to vapour.

Effect of wind speed on evaporation:

  • Increasing the wind speed increases the evaporation rate.
  • When the speed of wind increases the vapour particles move away, this leads to increase in the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere.
