Question

What is facilitated diffusion? How symport transport is different from antiport transport?

Open in App
Solution

Facilitated diffusion (also known as facilitated transport or passive-mediated transport) is the process of spontaneous passive transport (as opposed to active transport) of molecules or ions across a biological membrane via specific transmembrane integral proteins. However, a symporter is an integral membrane protein that is involved in the transport of many different types of molecules across the cell membrane. The transporter is called a symporter because the molecules will travel in the same direction in relation to each other. This is in contrast to the antiport transporter.
