Coagulation:

  1. Coagulation which is also known as clotting, is the transformation of blood from a liquid to semisolid, resulting in the formation of a blood clot.
  2. Coagulation factors are the proteins present in blood which help in controlling bleeding.

Mechanism of coagulation:

  1. Clotting factor II or prothrombin is a coagulation factor that requires vitamin K to function.
  2. It is involved in the coagulation of blood. In activated form the prothrombin is split proteolytically to produce thrombin.
  3. Thrombin is a serine protease that converts fibrinogen to fibrin.
  4. Thrombin is also involved in the catalysis of a variety of other coagulation-related processes.
