Fish farming is the process of cultivation of fish for profit. Fish farming may be categorised as freshwater fish farming, brackish water fish farming, saltwater or marine fish farming.

Characters of fish which can be used for cultivation:

• Fishes grow to a larger size in a shorter period.
  
• The cultured species of fish should be able to adapt to the local climatic conditions.
  
• The fish should have the capacity to tolerate wide fluctuations in the physiochemical conditions such as oxygen, salinity, temperature etc of the water.
