Question

What is frequency deviation formula?

Open in App
Solution

Diagram for frequency modulation

Frequency modulation is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by varying the instantaneous frequency of the wave. The technology is used in telecommunications, radio broadcasting, signal processing, and computing.

The explanation for frequency deviation formula

  1. The number of waves that pass a fixed place in a given amount of time is called frequency.
  2. The way to describe the difference between the minimum and maximum extent of a frequency modulated signal and the carrier frequency is called frequency deviation in FM.
  3. The formula for frequency deviation is given by

f=kfxt

Where kf is the frequency deviation constant.

xt is baseband signal

In telecommunications and signal processing, baseband is the range of frequencies occupied by a signal that has not been modulated to higher frequencies. Baseband signals typically originate from transducers, converting some other variable into an electrical signal.

4.Tone modulation is “a modulation in which the modulation is carried out by a single frequency (tone) signal”.

The toned (single frequency) modulating signal consists of only one frequency component and this signal is modulated with a carrier signal

For tone modulation, the frequency deviation is

f=kfAm

Where, Am is the amplitude of modulating signal.

5. The unit of frequency deviation is hertz (Hz).

6. The frequency deviation of a radio is of particular importance in relation to band width, because less deviation.

7. The frequency deviation in PM carrier is proportional to frequency and amplitude of the modulating signal both.
