- The materials which are burnt to produce a large amount of heat energy are known as fuels.
- Examples: Wood ,coal,LPG,kerosene ,diesel,petrol.
- Fuels play an important role in our daily life because they are used in homes, vehicles, and industries.
Classifiaction of fuels
Fuels are classified on the basis of the physical state in which they occur. So fuels are classified as follows
- Solid fuels: These exist in a solid state at room temperature. Examples are coal, coke, charcoal, wood, paraffin, and wax.
- Liquid fuels: These exist in a liquid state at room temperature. Examples are kerosene and diesel.
- Gaseous fuels: These exist in a gaseous state at room temperature. Examples are LPG, CNG, and Biogas.
Step 3 Calorific value: The amount of heat energy produced on complete combustion of 1Kg of a fuel is called its calorific value.
Examples ;
- Wood gives 17,000 - 22,000 KJ/Kg
- LPG gives 55,000 KJ/Kg.
- Hydrogen gas gives 1,50,000 KJ/Kg
