Diversity: It refers to the heterogeneity present in the world or a habitat, ranging from macromolecules within the cells to biomes.
- Alpha diversity is the diversity within a particular area or ecosystem; usually expressed by the number of species (i.e., species richness) in that ecosystem.
- Beta diversity is a comparison of diversity between ecosystems, usually measured as the number of species changes between the ecosystems.
- Gamma diversity: It is a measure of the overall diversity within a large region.
For example:
- Alpha Diversity: Site A = 7 species, Site B = 5 species, Site C = 7 species.
- Beta Diversity: is observed between Site A and C with 10 species that differ between them and only 2 species in common.
- Gamma Diversity: the gamma diversity is 3 habitats with 12 species in total diversity.
