Question

What is Gene Interaction? Describe their types?

Open in App
Solution

When expression of one gene depends on the presence or absence of another gene in an individual, it is known as gene interaction. The interaction of genes at different loci that affect the same character is called epistasis. The gene that masks another gene is called epistatic gene, and the gene whose expression is masked is termed as hypostatic gene. Epistasis is also referred to as inter-genic or inter-allelic gene interaction. There are 8 main different types of gene interaction:
  1. The interaction between Dominant factors.
  2. Complementary factors.
  3. Supplementary factor.
  4. Epistasis.
  5. Effect of Inhibitory factor.
  6. Duplicate factors.
  7. Multiple factors or Polygenic Inheritance.
  8. Lethal factor.
