Question

What is genetic equilibrium? Write any four factors affecting Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

Open in App
Solution

Genetic equilibrium describes the condition of an allele or genotype in a gene pool (such as a population) where the frequency does not change from generation to generation. It is also called as Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Any factor which can disturb the alleles in a population is likely to affect the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
The factors affecting Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are:
(i) Mutation
(ii) Migration
(iii) Genetic drift
(iv) Recombination
(v) Natural selection.
