What is genetic manipulation? How is it useful in agricultural practices?

Open in App
Solution

Genetic manipulation

  1. In this process genes from the wanted plant are taken and transferred to another plant by using the technique of hybridization.
  2. It helps to produce desirable agronomic characteristics such as dwarfness in cereals and tallness and profuse branching in fodder crops.

Uses of genetic manipulation in agricultural practices

  1. It is used to develop varieties whose yield is increased, have better quality, an early maturity period, and a better ability to adapt to adverse environmental conditions and some other desirable characteristics.
  2. Agricultural practices for the cultivation of the crop and some yielding practices depend directly on the agronomic conditions. These conditions get affected by weather, soil quality, and the availability of water resources.
  3. Crop varieties have been developed that can be grown in any climatic conditions as weather conditions cannot be predicted like drought, flood, etc.
