The roots would start growing downward while the stem would grow upward. This response to gravity is called geotropism. Geotropism is the influence of gravity on plant growth or movement. The root cap is important as it contains cells with sensors called statoliths. Statoliths are parts of the root cell to the lowest part of the root cap in response to the pull of gravity. The movement of nutrients, minerals and water in a plant are examples of geotropism.
