What is goiter? and how is it caused?

Goiter:

  1. It is the enlargement of the thyroid gland due to inflammation.
  2. It appears as a lump in the neck which moves up and down while swallowing.

Causes of goiter:

  1. When there is low iodine in the diet, the thyroid doesn’t receive enough amount of iodine for the production of thyroid hormone.
  2. The thyroid works extra hard to make thyroid hormone and increase its cell number resulting in the enlargement of the thyroid gland.
  3. Hence, goiter is the inflammation of the thyroid gland, which enlarges it and is caused due to iodine deficiency.
