Goitre:

  1. Goitre is a condition in which the thyroid gland (present attached to the trachea) becomes enlarged or undergoes inflammation.
  2. This disorder occurs when there is a deficiency of iodine which is essential for producing the thyroxine hormone.
  3. If the secretion of thyroxine hormone is low, it leads to the enlargement of the thyroid gland, i.e. goitre.
