It is a characteristic fruit in the citrus species. The fruit is developed from superior, multicarpellary, and syncarpous ovaries where the epicarp is leathery with oil glands. The mesocarp is thin and white.
The thin endocarp is drawn inwards into folds to divide the fruit into many units. The edible part is nothing but the unicellular juicy hairs on the endocarp. For example – orange and sweet lemon.
The mesocarp and the epicarp together form the rind.
